A Conversation with SONIA ELISHEVA
Sonia Elisheva’s debut album, was released on April 11th 2025, blends her Eastern European roots with jazz and electro swing influences, creating a unique and highly personal LP.
Pulling together cultural influences from half-remembered gypsy melodies & pop sensibilities, her songs explore themes of displacement, memory, home & identity, filtered through an adopted London street patter with trademark humour & irreverence.
”I want this album to inspire people to explore their own family stories and embrace the complexity of who they are,” Sonia says.
After a year of standout releases on UK label Freshly Squeezed and earning continued support from BBC Introducing and Spotify, Sonia has made her mark in the electro-swing and jazz world. Now, she expands her sound, embracing a broader musical landscape. The album’s title track serves as a powerful metaphor for belonging without borders, reflecting her refusal to be confined by genre or identity. Yet, Black Sea balances its depth with moments of pure fun, delivering fresh, danceable tracks that showcase Sonia’s signature fusion of styles.
Black Sea is a bold debut from an artist who refuses to fit inside any box.
ABOUT SONIA ELISHEVA
London based singer & songwriter SONIA ELISHEVA combines the vernacular of her adopted city with the folk roots of her Eastern European heritage. Growing up with half her family from Ukraine & the other half in the British suburbs, she found herself with a foot in 2 cultures. Unsurprisingly her music brings together elements of all the above. Her gig history correspondingly swings from a sold out show at London’s world-famous Pizza Express Live (with her 7 piece jazz band) to the Electro Swing night at Shoreditch’s Book Club via The Troubadour!
As an independent artist she previously earned herself features on several Spotify editorial playlists including: New Music Friday UK, Electro Swing and Jazz UK as well as radio support from BBC Introducing and 6Music. Releases followed on Berlin’s Electro Swing Thing and with NZ producer Odd Chap before signing to Brighton label heard here: This Is Freshly Squeezed.
