A Conversation With Sisterhood Project. Mark-Xtreme
Above all, Leona Berlin’s music is authentic. It’s a dedication to curiosity and profundity instead of plastic and shallow mainstream culture. Of course, every piece of her heavenly delightful alternative soul is self-written and self-produced. Her work is an intoxicating blend of hip hop, R&B and a wide range of contemporary influences. Following her debut with Warner Music in 2018 she has collaborated with artists like Snoop Dogg, Ray Angry (The Roots) and Casey Benjamin (Robert Glasper Experiment).
Her second album titled „Change” (Nov. 2021) features contributions from NYC rapper Stimulus and keyboardist Rob Araujo, earning a spot on the “German Record Critics Award” bestlist 2022 (PdSK). In 2023, she appeared on Gregory Hutchinson’s album DA BANG with several tracks, a collaboration that testifies to her incredible musical range as a singer, songwriter and producer. Leona’s third album is now underway, produced by herself alongside drummer/producer Magro, who has been a present name in her project for years and has been influential to her unique sound. The three singles already released show an expansion of her singing towards rap and mark an exciting change in her style.
Leona Berlin returns with her new single “BRIGHTER DAY“. This track delivers a cool, late-summer vibe with a touch of 90s nostalgia, making you think of cruising into the sunset in an old Mercedes. Leona’s smooth voice and her laid-back flow blend perfectly with the bouncy hip hop beat, while a soothing piano solo by Ulf Kleiner in the second half enhances the song’s relaxed flow.
BRIGHTER DAY explores deeper themes, with Leona talking about losing her grip on reality and slipping into uncertainty. She reflects on the groundlessness that comes when there is nothing left to hold onto —no dreams, no ambitions, no meaning. Yet, instead of drama, Leona conveys a strangely calm, neutral sense of acceptance, even as she stands on the edge of madness. This subtle, metaphysical message conveys a bittersweet joy to those who like thinking about life’s bigger questions.
Beyond its deeper meaning, the song has an uplifting vibe, with a strong melody and a catchy hook that gives it a positive, nostalgic feeling. It’s both chilled-out and emotional, the trance-like rhythm leaving listeners with a sense of calm. BRIGHTER DAY is part of the lead-up to her highly anticipated new album scheduled for spring 2025.
